Scribl.com Ebook File Conversion and Submission Guidelines

When submitting your manuscript to Scribl.com for publication, you will need the following. Note that for now, all pictures and descriptive/promotional text should be family friendly and kid-safe, meaning no profanity or pornographic images, even if the content is adult-oriented:

  1. Your completed manuscript in one to three formats. The creation of the first format from a lightly formatted novel-length work should take about 10 minutes if following our instructions here.
    1. EPUB for e-readers like Kindle, tablets, phones
    2. Optional Adobe Reader PDF format for large-screen/PC reading (good for children's books or other books with lots of pictures)
    3. Optional Audiobook Format: One MP3 per chapter (multiple files per chapter if chapter longer than 78 minutes), plus an intro and outro, all at 192kbps, 44.1kHz, Joint Stereo.
  2. Your sales materials-blurbs to promote your work.
    1. A short 1-paragraph description, up to 500 characters, including spaces. Think of this as akin to the blurb on the back of a paperback. This will appear in the description view of books on the site and when users review their Stack. The short description, along with the cover image, serve as the frontline on-site promotion for your work. Use this to get browsing readers to click on your book to learn more.
    2. The long description, up to 3,000 characters, including spaces. Your prospective reader will see this if they click on the book to learn more. This should describe the work to entice readers to download or buy it.
    3. Cover art. At this time, Scribl.com is not able to grab a cover image from your ebook file, so you will need to upload this directly. The image should be at least 1680 pixels wide by 2520 pixels tall (or use 6" x 9" at 300dpi). Your cover should have a 2:3 width to height aspect ratio. If you believe your cover must be a different shape for artistic reasons, contact your Scribl Author Support assistant.
  3. Additional Info Scribl.com needs
    1. The title of your work. If it starts with an "A" or "The", by default we'll remove that for alphabetic sorting. Consider if you need to keep this for some reason. You might if your title were "A Priori Defense of Articles", where the starting "A" is part of the word "a priori" and is not an article.
    2. Optional additional title info: The subtitle of your book, if you have one, and the series name and number.
    3. The general type of book: Story (fiction and true stories), Knowledge (a teaching or topical book and books that are sorted by subject matter), a Children's book, Poetry or Verses, or Play or Screenplay. Currently we only support Stories and Knowledge books, with support for the others coming soon.
    4. If there are images in your book (not counting the cover), how many are there? The count should include illustrations, figures, graphs, photos, etc.
    5. The number of words in your work. The word count will determine the length category of your book (i.e., is it a novel or a short story?). Some word counts could fall into multiple length categories, in which case we will suggest a default, but let you change this if you prefer.
    6. The language of the book. We accept books in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish. If you'd like us to add support for an additional language, please send us a note at support@scribl.com and let us know. No promises, but if we get enough requests for a new language, we will try to add support for that language.
    7. Up to 5 keywords for your book. These are specific words that reference major themes of your book and will help with user searches. Note that you shouldn't waste these on genere terms or what is already covered by our Story Elements system. Rather they should be highly specific to the subject matter of your book. Keywords like "romance," "adventure," and "young adult" would be a waste and not helpful. "Spanish Inquisition," "spelunking," and "alchemy" would be good.
    8. Optional Publication Details: publish date, edition (first, second, etc.), the publisher name, and if you have them 13-digit ebook, audiobook, and print edition ISBNs. If you don't already have ISBNs, note that we will provide one for free for each edition you sign up to participate in CrowdPricing Everywhere (ebook or audiobook).
    9. You will also need to have your Story Element or Book Element (for non-stories) selections. These are the core attributes that define your story or book that readers can use to find titles that match their personal preferences. Story Elements ensure your book is discovered by readers who are most likely to enjoy it from the day you post it.
